What should you consider when buying a dining table?
It can be tempting to just pick a pretty table. But it's not that simple. You will definitely want to use the table for many years and do it as optimally as possible. It's supposed to be fun and back-free - enjoying good food and then sitting together and talking and laughing until you're sick. Therefore, it is important to take a few things into consideration to ensure that you and your guests can sit comfortably at the table for long periods of time.
Kitchen table height matters
The height between the table and chairs plays a decisive role. If you sit too high, your thighs may hit the underside of the tabletop, which can be difficult when eating for long periods of time. If you sit too low, you will have difficulty resting your hands on the table because your shoulders will be pulled up unnaturally.
A good rule of thumb is to keep the distance between the seat and the tabletop no more than 30cm. Remember to measure from the actual seat. Be especially careful with chairs with cushions or built-in upholstery, as they will sink when you sit on them. Therefore, you should measure from this sitting position. Otherwise, the sitting distance increases and the table becomes too high.
If you're not in the mood to choose a table to match the chairs, you can also choose one of our table sets. They are designed in such a way that everything fits together perfectly, so you don't have to worry about anything.
It is also necessary to consider the number of people who will sit at the table. Here everyone should be able to sit comfortably and not bump into each other while eating. The approximate width of each seat is 60 cm. Therefore, a dining table for four, where two people sit side by side, should be at least 120 cm long. If you want six people to sit next to each other on each side, it should be no longer than less than 180 cm, etc. If you are not entirely sure whether you need space for four or six (or even more) people, we recommend an extendable table. It can easily be extended if necessary, for example for a larger celebration, and is otherwise a nice, compact length.
The position of the table legs also plays a role
It is also necessary to take into account the position of the table legs. If they are located right at the edge, your guests can easily sit next to each other. If the legs are positioned more centrally, you need to think even more about the table's dimensions and legroom. If there are too many people sitting at the dinner table, some guests may end up with an irritating table leg between their legs. And it can end up being annoying if you hit your knee every time you stand up. Therefore, it’s worth taking this into account too, otherwise long dinners become torture the longer the evening goes on!
